THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
For the week of 10 December 2007, we'll study the silent film version of The Phantom of the Opera (Rupert Julian, 1925). This is another chance to study silent film style. Lon Chaney's performance as the Phantom is one of the most famous performances in film history. His self-made makeup (right) is also among the most famous horror faces in movie history. The moment when his face is unmasked by Christine (above, left) is one of the classic sequences in horror movies. You can view the film either on youtube (in two segments) or Google video.
