Three Songs for Mother's Day

Three Mother's Day Songs
This is one of the most famous Mother's Day songs. Click to hear Country singer, Eddy Arnold sing "Mother."

M-O-T-H-E-R
(A WORD THAT MEANS THE WORLD TO ME)
"M" is for the million things she gave me
"O" means only that she's growing old
"T" is for the tears she shed to save me
"H" is for her heart of purest gold
"E" is for her eyes with love-light shining
"R" means right, and right she'll always be
Put them all together they spell MOTHER,
A word that means the world to me.

"M" is for the mercy she possesses
"O" means that I owe her all I own
"T" is for her tender, sweet caresses
"H" is for her hands that made a home
"E" means ev'rything she's done to help me
"R"means real and regular, you see
Put them all together they spell MOTHER,
A word that means the world to me.

MOTHER
Here is a song of loss rather than love. John Lennon wrote and recorded this song on his first solo album after leaving The Beatles. It's an extraordinary song and vocal. The song ends with Lennon's cathartic screams (he was going through Primal Therapy at the time). Barbra Streisand's cover is equally amazing, reinventing the song for her own voice.

Mother, you had me, but I never had you.
Father, I wanted you, you didn't want me.
So I, I just gotta tell you
GOODBYE, GOODBYE.

Father, you left me, but I never left you.
I needed you, you didn't need me.
So I, I just gotta tell you
GOODBYE, GOODBYE.

Children, don't do, what I have done.
I couldn't walk, and I tried to run.
So I, I just gotta tell you
GOODBYE, GOODBYE.

Mama don't go
Daddy come home!

OH, MOTHER
Another song about mothers, from a social point of view. Here the mother has been abused. Christina Aguilera's song has lyrics. Go here.
