MONSTER'S BALL

THIS MOVIE IS not about monsters like the mummy or the Frankenstein monster, but concerns issues related to race and the generations.
Halle Berry became the first African American woman to win a Best Actress Oscar for her role as Leticia Musgrove. We'll discuss some of the acting in the film, but our main focus will be on editing, since this film uses classical continuity editing (that is, match cutting on action) only rarely; most of the editing is discontinuous and elliptical, with frequent changes of angles.
There is also several uses of sound bridges and overlaps (that is, dialogue spoken in one scene overlaps in another scene). This is also part of the editor's job.
Of course, you should not only study the sequence of shots in terms of discontinuous editing, but try to relate form and content, since style should be an expression of content and theme. Attached are some study pictures for the film.
