For Tuesday 14 and Thursday 16, October 2008

14 October 2008

STUDENTS CAN EASILY see that the two Twilight Zone shows we have seen (Eye of the Beholder and The Lateness of the Hour) share the same theme: conformity. Yet both address this theme in the sci-fi (science fiction) genre. All art is designed to entertain and to instruct.

For Tuesday, besides finishing our handout on The Lateness of the Hour, you can revisit both shows (don't forget to buy yourself a chocolate bar) and try to view the shows from the point of view of their social message, instead of just the plot.

On Tuesday and Thursday of next week, we'll have two students at a time come to the front of the class and discuss some of the social issues or the social message that you learned from both shows.

The Eye of the Beholder is not really about beauty. What is it about?

The Lateness of the Hour is not about the programing of robots. What is it about?

Give examples and analogies with what you know of socialization since childhood. Also discuss how the two shows teach the same lesson.

If you wish to choose your partner yourselves, you may do so; this way you can prepare better.
