NOTORIOUS
26 September 2008

THE FIRST FILM we'll study this semester will be Alfred Hitchcock's Notorious (1946) with two of the biggest Hollywood stars of their era: Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman. Star images also factor in film appreciation: Bergman's star image was mainly developed around earthy beauty (though her star image changed over time). Cary Grant remained the greatest romantic Hollywood leading man throughout the 1940s and 1950s, until his retirement in his early 60s.
Alfred Hitchcock was a star himself and still the most famous director in the world; in fact the only director whose picture often appears on DVD box covers instead of the stars!
Hitchcock was at the height of his fame in the 1950s, with a monthly Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, a half-hour weekly TV show and another hour weekly TV show, as well as a long-playing album to his credit!
In addition, he appeared in brief "cameos" in all his Hollywood films (beginning in 1940) and some of his British films (before 1940). In Notorious Hitchcock can be seen drinking a glass of wine at the party (see the handout pictures).
Notorious is one of Hitchcock's most celebrated films. Among the more famous scenes is the long kissing scene which cheated the movie censors (the censors allowed only three-second kissing scenes) and the famous crane shot that begins over the party floor and slowly descends to the key in Ingrid Bergman's hand (see slide how, left).
