A Child Is Born
These lines from a popular Christmas song of today show the influence the Book of Isaiah on popular culture. Many lines can be traced back to that book, whether the writer knew the source or not. Edward Hicks, the eighteenth-century Quaker* artist, especially made Isaiah's texts popular with his painting series known as The Peaceable Kingdom (see attachments), based on Isaiah chapters 2 and 11.
*The Quakers formed a branch of Christianity that placed stress on nonviolence and "the inner light." Properly called the Society of Friends, they became familiarly known as Quakers because of the enthusiasm they showed in their worship.
A ray of hope flitters in the sky
A tiny star lights up way up high (Genesis 49:10; Numbers 24:17)
All across the land dawns a brand new morn (Isaiah 65:17)
This comes to pass when a child is born. (Isaiah 9:6)
(Spoken)
And all of this happens
Because whe world is waiting
Waiting for one child (Isaiah 9:6)
Black, white, yellow, no one knows
But a child that would grow up (Isaiah 11:1-4)
And turn tears to laughter (Isaiah 65:19)
Hate to love, war to peace (Isaiah 2:4)
And everyone to everyone's neighbour (Isaiah 41:6)
Misery and suffering would be forgotten forever (42:9)
It's all a dream and illusion now
It must come true, sometimes soon somehow
All across the land dawns a brand new morn (Isaiah 65:17)
This comes to pass when a child is born.
